Highborder Lodge has been an established Care Home for over 20 years; owned by the Proprietor, Mr Roger Thorne. Roger’s previous experience has been in engineering, but since taking over the Home, he has undertaken mandatory training and completed a Registered Manager’s Award.
Registered Manager: Caroline Wakefield
Caroline is the registered manager at Highborder Lodge. Caroline came to Highborder Lodge in August 2011 and is responsible for the day to day management of the home and takes great pride in ensuring that the needs and well being of the residents are met.
Caroline’s own personal philosophy is to “Treat people as you wish to be treated yourself”
Having worked in the care industry for 36 years within Gloucestershire and a care manager for 9 years Caroline holds both a Diploma 5 in Health and Social Care Management as well as the Registered Manager certification.

Out of office hours Caroline is available on call for emergencies.
We have four senior care assistants currently in post and 2 Acting Seniors who have been especially selected for their skills and professionalism within elderly care. They have a minimum qualification of NVQ3 in Health & Social Care and attend regular mandatory training sessions. They are all currently undertaking training courses in Leadership Skills, which enable them to take an active part in mentoring and leading the care team.
Within Highborder Lodge, the training and development of staff takes a very high priority and many opportunities are made available to colleagues to increase their knowledge and develop their skills. Over 50% of our care staff have NVQ2 and/or above. Management feel that we have a very good core team of care staff and with encouragement and support, they will all achieve their ambitions. Our Training Co-Ordinator, arranges courses and mandatory training for all of our staff.
Kitchen Team – Led by Head Chef, Joel Turner, assisted by Cooks, Michelle Debieux & Denise Hardwick, Karen Marks is our dining room assistant
The cooks are assisted by Sue Hayward who is in her 22nd year, Dean Cropton, Christine Dawson & Danuta Kowalska
All our kitchen team undergo mandatory training in Food Hygiene/Infection Control and are encouraged to develop their skills.
Laundry is undertaken by Emma Stanworth and Danuta Kowals and Housekeepers, Judy Bennett, Jane Hornsby, Julie Davies, Laura Cook, Mandy Bracey, Sarah Masson, Sam Stroud & Rita Fry. All of these ladies are committed to providing a high standard of cleanliness in the Home. The team are encouraged to undertake training and develop their skills.
Maintenance – We are due to welcome Anthony Buffin this month to HBL as responsible for all Maintenance issues. Anthony has several years experience in all aspects of maintenance in a care home setting and is assisted by Norman Brown, an ex-fireman, who undertakes basic instruction of new staff in fire safety. Norman Brown & Sid Lord are insured to drive our mini bus.
The Office Administration is undertaken by Gen Stephens. Gen has worked at HBL for over 22yrs and has NVQ3 in Business Admin. Gen is assisted by Gilly Wain who has been here for many years and has, over the last few years, taken up the Activities Co-ordinator role and has expanded our programme of events. Gilly attends Activities Training and Group Meetings by the Gloucestershire Care Providers Association and is keen to network with other care homes in the area. Gilly specialises in dementia activities.
Our beautiful gardens are managed by Sid Lord, who is dedicated to keeping the grounds at HBL in tip top condition. He has spent many hours tending the lawns, flower beds and greenhouse and is happy to encourage our residents to join his gardening club arranged through Gilly’s activities programme
